Your own Personal Career Marketing Plan

Celebration, FL - Job seekers need to create a plan to “market” themselves to prospective employers.  Take the time to clearly think through your own Personal Career “Marketing” Plan and then work the plan to achieve your goals.

Start by thinking of your job search like you would if you were working for a company marketing a new product or service.  If you were creating a marketing plan for a new widget, what would the plan include?  Try completing a plan for your job search with the following elements:

  • Resume: What have you got to sell? – Create a resume which is professional and tells the reader what you offer.
  • Marketing Materials: Take the time and money to establish professional marketing materials for your career search.  Business cards, resume, letterhead created in Word, portfolio of past accomplishments, and your digital photo in business attire for special summary resumes.
  • Exposure: Where will you market your credentials?  Make a list.  Internet job boards, direct mail campaigns, broadcast emails, word of mouth, trade shows, association meetings, past employers, alumni groups, local networking meetings…
  • Networking: Now that you have the tools to sell, fire up your network and get out there in the real world.  Networking with every person you meet.
  • Tools of the Trade: What tools will you need to conduct your marketing campaign?  Calendar, contact database, new interviewing clothes, voicemail, internet access, reliable computer…
  • Research: How will you seek out the opportunities, networking meetings, recruiters, potential employers, etc.?  Start researching on the internet, go to the library, dig through the directories, and ask questions of others in a job search.
  • Action Plan:  Now that you have all of the front end work done, create an action plan and get to work.  Stick with the plan and work it just like any other job.
  • Measure Your Progress:  Just like in any other business, you need to assess your progress in achieving your goals.  Bite off small chunks and continually correct your direction to improve your results.

The final success of your Personal Career Marketing Plan effort is of course the achievement of your next great job opportunity.  Create the plan, work the plan, measure your results, stay focused, and market yourself with a plan.
